Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to contest specific calls from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
