The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
