The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
