Fury Explodes as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Criticism

Figures from across the partisan aisle and the Hollywood industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Detention

Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was established at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures

The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.

This is a appalling and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the remarks. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. So sick."

Criticism from His Own Political Ranks

Some GOP lawmakers also voiced dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his party to defend the comments.

Reiner's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.

"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of another individual.

An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
