California's Governor States He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has revealed that he plans to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Absolutely, I would be lying if I said no," Newsom commented when pressed about giving serious thought to a White House bid following the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

Newsom's current term as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any decision is still years away.

"The future will decide," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

He has stepped forward as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, employing his social media accounts and championing a proposition that would increase the party's House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from critics.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a recent interview on a major news network. Duffy announced a strategy to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested suspending the power to provide CDLs.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," he declared, in the wake of a recent deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that led to fatalities and four injuries.

Newsom's office highlighted that the U.S. government had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to receive a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had before announced he was holding back $40m from California for ignoring English language requirements for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team responded in a last month's comment addressing the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted survey found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has grown to an typical level of a third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, the governor commented while visiting several swing states that he had "no idea" about his future for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The notion that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
